American Tourist Killed in Accident While on a Cruise

February 10, 2011

A sixty year old American tourist met a tragic death a few days ago while diving off the coast of Belize. She had signed up for a diving tour when her ship, the Ryndam Cruise of Holland America Cruise Line, stopped at that port.

According to Police, she suffered a severe cut to her right leg and two smaller cuts to her face. The tourist was then rushed to a local hospital, but her injuries were to great and she died.

Cruise Lines Are Responsible for Passenger's Safety

It is not clear from the above news report whether the victim booked her shore excursion directly through the ship. If so, Holland America maybe found liable for her death. Cruise lines are responsible for the safety of their passengers, even when harm comes their way while on a shore excursion booked on the ship.

Cruise Ship Accidents Not Uncommon

Unfortunately, accidents befall cruise passengers quite frequently while cruising. From the common "slip and fall" that happens when a passenger steps on a greasy or wet floor to assaults by members of the crew or other passengers, anything can happen while on a cruise vacation. Other incidents involving passengers include:

1. Drowning
2. Burn Injuries or Smoke Inhalation
3. Sexual Assault by members of the crew or other passengers
4. Falling Overboard

In each of those cases, the cruise line is responsible for the safety of their passengers and can be found liable for the injuries they suffer.

If you or a loved one have suffered serious injuries or death while on a cruise vacation or have been the victims of serious crimes while on a cruise ship vacation, you may be entitled to financial compensation by the cruise line. Please note that these cases are often governed by the conditions set in the cruise lines' ticket, which usually establishes a term of six months to give written notice of the claim and one year from the sail date to bring action against the company. Therefore, we urge to immediately contact an attorney with experience handling these cases. The Cruise Lines Injury Attorneys of Greenberg, Stone & Urbano, P.A. have handled many such cases over the years and can help you obtain the compensation you are entitled to.
